It is one of only two numbers retired by the FIA.
The Federation Internationale de l'Automobile, more commonly known as the FIA, has retired the number 43 from the World Rally Championship (WRC) for 2023 following the untimely death of Ken Block.
Block used car number 43 in several categories, including WRC, the Americas Rallycross Championship, the FIA European Rallycross Championship, the FIA World Rallycross Championship, and the 2022 East African Safari. The number is also featured in each of his famous Gymkhana series, including the very first starring a Subaru WRX STI rally car. It was even carried over when Block joined Audi and filmed the first non-combustion Gymkhana video.

According to the FIA, the number will be retired for the 2023 season, though it's not clear whether it will be made available for the 2024 season.
The chances are high that #43 will never appear again, looking at the FIA's history and use of racing numbers. This is only the second time in the FIA's history that a number has been retired. It retired the number 17 in 2015 following the tragic death of Jules Bianchi due to injuries sustained at the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix.

Bianchi's number has been retired for life, and the same will likely happen to Block's number. Racing numbers tend to have a personal connection to their drivers, except for Kimi Raikkonen, who just picked something randomly. A racing number is only available for use two years after a racer has retired, just in case they want to make a comeback.
Most F1 drivers use the numbers they used while karting during their younger years. We believe this personal connection is why no other driver would ever want to use Block's number again.
